i ride dressage and i ride school horses but i was just wondering for the future when i get my own horse (after all this begging and pleading that im doing right now pays off) if i can use an all purpose english saddle for dressage, because dressage is all i ride. the all purpose saddles seem to be a lot cheaper than the dressage ones, so i was just wondering. thanks
well it’s called an all purpose saddle. . . meaning you can use it for basically all purposes. so the answer is yes.
i rode dressage in my all purpose.

how are dressage saddle seats measured vs close contact saddles? If I ride in a 15 3/4" close contact saddle, does this mean I need 16" seat dressage saddle? Thanks!
Alot will depend on how deep the seat is. The deeper the seat usually means you will need a larger size. The saddle I use for jumping is a 16 inch. My dressage saddle has a much deeper seat and is 17.5. Best way is to sit on one then try it on a horse to be sure of the best fit.

What are your opinions of Bates dressage saddles? I started dressage with a Wintec, because my giant TB is so hard to fit, because he is not the typical narrow TB. Now I have shown and have a lot more experience, so I need a more serious dressage saddle. I think I will stick with the "easy change gullet system" because I can't fit my TB in anything! I want to stay under $2K for the next saddle, and I am finding Bates Isabell and Bates Innova, as well as Bates Caprilli online in my price range. Wanted to know who has them, who likes them/dislikes them, who has heard good/bad things about them. I would love to ride in a Passier or something nice, but I can't fit my gelding in these saddles. Any opinions, etc, are welcome, thanks!
I think that the Bates saddles are comfortable, but then I use mine for hunter/jumper. I'm sure that the dressage are similar to the hunter/jumper, but I think that they are great saddles. I think the Caprilli are the nicest, but go with your gut.
Good Luck!
