I’ve been trying out some dressage saddles lately, trying to find out what kind I like best before I buy one. The one I JUST tried was extremely comfortable and fit perfectly EXCEPT it hurt in the crotch area? Is that normal? LOL I’m assuming it’s not xD But other than that also, what should it feel like?
It might be too narrow a twist for you, or it might be the wrong seat shape. Check out this link for pictures of different seat shapes: http://www.ultimatedressage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=180457&p=6473237&hilit=seat#p6473237
I just got a new saddle, and I had to try on sooo many before finding the right one! It’s frustrating, but the right saddle is out there! Good luck.

It shouldn’t hurt in the crotch area, unless you’re sitting funny. Could it be the twist doesn’t fit?

Can you explain a little better what the discomfort is in that area? Such as, is the pommel too high and you’re slamming into it? Or is the seat too hard and not enough cusion? Or maybe the twist is too narrow for you?
In any case, here’s what I would recommend: if you’re trying out saddles, call up some different saddle representatives (even if you’re not seriously considering buying from them), tell them the problems you’ve had with different saddles and what you’re looking for, describe your body type to them, and ask if they can give you any suggestions of a type of saddle that will work best for you. Of course they will try to sell you one, but they might be able to give you some helpful info also. I have a friend who is a Trilogy rep and was able to talk to me about all of the different body types and how different saddles are made to fit different types of people, and how important it is to find one that’s built right for you. My mom got a lot of good info from an Albion rep before. If you’re just going through a tack shop, they probably aren’t as knowledgable in answering those questions as someone who actually represents those saddles.

No it’s not. I can’t really describe the feel of a dressage saddle, everyone has there own tastes and opinions, but it shouldn’t hurt. If it hurts, than you’ll find it very hard to work your horse in.

No, it is not normal. I had that happen with a custom saddle which really ended up being bad for me because I couldn’t return it or anything therefore I was stuck with it. But anyways, What happened with mine was that the pommel was cut out more so there was no pressure on the withers but then it made the seat very small and always was hitting my crotch and it hurt really bad. I would try a bigger size if you like the saddle, but if you didn’t like the saddle just look for a different brand.
A correct feel of the saddle is just the most important thing is that its COMFORTABLE. Your leg lays nicely, you have enough support on your thigh, some people may like more support then others. You can sit well in the saddle you may like the more snug feeling of the deep seat, or a little less snug. I would just suggest to try a bunch of different styles then you will find things that you like on some and dislike and then you can figure out what your ideal saddle would be!!!! Good Luck!!!! =)
